Is The Rolex Sky-Dweller the next Daytona?
There are a lot of people out there asking if the Rolex Sky-Dweller is going to replace the Daytona as Rolex’s best selling watch. My answer to this is that the Sky-Dweller will become more of a 2nd Daytona in terms of popularity, but won’t replace the Daytona.
Rolex Sky-Dweller
The Sky-Dweller is the most complicated piece made by Rolex.
It is an annual calendar even though it may not look like it at first glance.
Taking a closer look, you will see there are small boxes at each of the hour marks, these indicate the 12 months of the year. As the month’s change, you will see the box turn from white to red to indicate the month.
You actually use the bezel on this watch to change the GMT, Time and Date.
When the crown is out, you move the bezel to choose the setting you wish to change. A very cool feature and this really adds to the complexity.
Started out trading between $18,000 to $20,000. They are still holding their value and actually trading over list price for over a year.
Corum Minute Repeater
Looks likes a skeleton time only watch at first glance.
This watch is made from titanium, which has become the new standard for making minute repeaters from. This is because the sound is much better with titanium.
You can see the detailing on this watch and the titanium gongs at 10 o’clock.
Really a great looking watch that you can get for a very reasonable price right now.
Retails for $277,000 but because Corum just isn’t as sought after at the moment, you can get this watch for $60,000 or less.
MB&F Horological Machine №2
This is a giant watch that really pushes the limits, and that is exactly what MB&F is all about.
MB&F does super futuristic, super weird, and super cool watch designs.
These guys really push the limits on watchmaking and are not afraid to try new things.
The story behind MB&F is really great. There is a press release that really sums up what this company is all about,
“After decades conforming to the rules of corporate watchmaking, Maximilian Busser broke the chains and started a rebellion in 2015; a rebellion called MB&F — Maximilian Busser & Friends.MB&F is an artistic concept laboratory-based around a simple idea; to assemble collective of independent watchmaking professionals to develop radical watches — Horological or Legacy Machines. By nurturing teams of talented individuals, harnessing their passion and creativity and crediting each person’s essential role, MB&F uses their synergy to become much greater than the sum of its parts. Respecting tradition, but never constrained by it, we reinterpret traditional, high-quality watchmaking into three-dimensional kinetic sculptures.”
The trading price on this watch is around $45,000 or 40% of the original retail ask of $79,000, this is not bad for an “independent” watchmaker.
